Xpress started out hot the first day, but ran into trouble on day 2. Their draw didn't do them any favors as they played 3 teams who made bracket play and the 4th was Reed Johnson who was ranked 5th nationally according to PG. Xpress threw everything they had against them and squeaked out a victory.
LVR was the one team to make bracket play in the Spring Series. They had a nice win against Lamorinda Titans who finished up as the #3 seed. They lost in bracket play to the eventual champs with players from California, Texas, and Hawaii. It's nice to see LVR put it together for a tournament.
GBG kept all of their games tight while MVP had some big losses despite bringing in players from out-of-state. I thought MVP had a pretty full roster, but I may have been wrong. If they did have a full roster, it's too bad they brought in other players.
Team Houston skipped out on maybe the best tournament in the west this year to play a softer USSSA tournament, finishing second. They might not have made bracket play had they played in the Spring Series, but at least give it a shot.
The question continues to be are teams closing the gap to Xpress? From what I could find on GC, Xpress is 7-1 against Houston and GBG this year. Houston beat them once and GBG kept it tight the last time they played in the scrimmages, but I don't think they are quite at the level of Xpress. LVR certainly showed something this weekend. Given that Xpress often plays up, they have not had the opportunity to play LVR yet. I think the only tournament they are both in is the Best of the West. Perhaps they will meet in bracket play there. If not, I'm not sure if we'll get the Xpress/LVR matchup we're all waiting for until 12U.
